The Last Rencong in the Beutong Jungle

Characters
Cut Nyak Dien: The main character. A tough female warrior and guerrilla leader, possessing an iron will and an unyielding spirit. In her old age, her physical condition is weakening, her eyesight is failing, and she suffers from gout, but the fire of her courage never fades.
Pang Laot Ali: The war commander and Cut Nyak Dien's most loyal bodyguard. He highly respects his leader, but recently experiences a massive internal conflict due to deep compassion and pity for her condition.
Dutch Forces (Maréchaussée): The antagonists who relentlessly hunt the remnants of Cut Nyak Dien's troops into the deep jungle.
Setting
The dense and steep jungle of Aceh (the Beutong Leutik region) in the early 20th century (around 1905). The atmosphere is depicted as gloomy, damp, cold, full of tension, starvation, and extreme limitations.
Conflict
Cut Nyak Dien's guerrilla troops are increasingly cornered, starving, and running out of ammunition. Cut Nyak Dien's worsening health makes Pang Laot Ali unable to bear it. An intense internal conflict peaks within Pang Laot: should he let his revered leader die slowly amidst the suffering of the jungle, or violate his principles by surrendering her to the Dutch so she can be treated humanely?
Ending
Pang Laot finally chooses to secretly meet the Dutch and reveal their hiding location, on the condition that the Dutch treat Cut Nyak Dien with utmost respect. When the ambush occurs, the near-blind Cut Nyak Dien gropes around for her rencong (traditional Acehnese dagger), becomes furious, and spits at Pang Laot, feeling deeply betrayed. She is eventually captured and exiled to Sumedang, West Java. Physically she is defeated, but her soul never surrenders.
Reflection
"Betrayal driven by pity is still a defeat for a warrior. This story teaches that dignity, freedom, and love for the homeland are principles that cannot be traded for physical comfort. True struggle lives forever in the soul, transcending the space of exile."
